Baking soda shampoo?!

Yes, that's right! I tried it tonight, we'll see what my hair looks like in the morning!
Right now, its shiny and clean! And it feels nice! The only thing I don't like right now,
is that it doesn't smell. Now that in and of itself isn't awful! But I was trying to think of
something to add to the baking soda to make it smell nice. Any ideas? Mom suggested
Vanilla....hmmm. Thanks to Serena (she actually sent it to me for skin care!) I found
this hair shampoo. (She calls it going poo-less. Isn't that cute?!) All I did was mix about
two tablespoons (she said one, but two worked better for me, as it made it a bit stronger)
with a 1 cup of water. and just mixed it with a spoon in a plastic cup. I think it might actually
work better maybe in a spray bottle? Seems like a good idea, I guess I'll see. Has anyone
else tried washing there hair in baking soda? Just curious how it worked for you if you did.
Oh yeah, Serena also suggested on her blog that she uses Apple Cider Vinegar. I'm not
sure if I'll try that, I might try mayonnaise in my hair instead. Let me know if you've done
any of this, and how it worked for you.

  1. I have tried baking soda in the place of shampoo. I actually tried it for about 2 months with good results.
How I do it is: Put about 3 Tbsp. baking soda in 1 qt. container and add about 1 cup of the hottest water in the tap. Swirl and let sit for a few minutes before using. If you have hard water... you may want to use boiling water. Just be sure and let it cool before using :) For the vinegar rinse I do: about 1/2 cup of vinegar in a 1 qt. container and fill to top with warm water. Rinse hair in it at the end of your shower, and then rinse with cold water. Your hair will be really nice and shiny :) At least mine always is.

Here is a link to a blog that does this too: http://inashoe.com/about-us/google-search-results-2/cx=0000867818646940 55151%3Apw beo3l6qsi&cof=FORID%3A11&ie=UTF-8&q=no-poo&sa=Search

I've enjoyed your blog and really like the link to the Rapunzels Resource blog too. :)

  2. When I was using baking soda, I mixed a tablespoon with a cup of warm water, then poured it over my head around the crown and on top. Make sure you are massaging it gently into your scalp and rinsing completely. Also helps if it's a new box of baking soda and not one that's been sitting opened a long time so it's not clumpy. Once you do it a few times, you'll notice where your hair tends to be oiliest and make sure you wash there in particular. It's easy to miss places when it doesn't lather. I never scented the BS, but I did use the ACV rinse and put some vanilla extract in that, with a cinnamon stick. [I'm not doing no-poo at the moment, but when I try again, I will likely use an actual vanilla bean instead of extract so I just have the scent and not the alcohol on my hair]. Only pour it on the ends, and definitely rinse with COLD water. It keeps your hair from getting frizzy. You eventually fall into a routine of what works best for you.

  3. I like to use baking soda on my hair at least once every other week or so. I use hairspray...a LOT of hairspray and sometimes I get a nasty white build-up on the ends of my hair. My hairdresser told me that if you mix baking soda with shampoo it will clean off the build-up, so I've been doing that for about 4 years now and it works wonderfully! I just mix a couple of tablespoons with my normal shampoo and it makes my hair feel so soft and gives it a shiny, healthy look. :) Baking soda is not just for biscuits and cookies!

  5. I've heard of using baking soda too... one thing you can try for fragrance would be essential oils. You wouldn't need a lot... just a couple drops in a batch, and it has a very good smell!

You might like the blogs Passionatehomemaking.com and frugalgranola.blogspot.com... they have awesome ideas for natural substitutes for different things... even deoderant, out of baking soda!

  7. I've actually started using Burt's bees. I Love it! It smells wonderful! And no Sodium Laureth Sulfate! but it's expensive. So I may switch to baking soda when I run out. (what I have now was a gift)

I do use Baking soda and apple cider vinegar on my skin. I use a tsp of baking soda in a cup of warm-hot water as a wash then I used the vinegar as an astringent.

It works sooo much bettern than Chemicals. And that's the best part! No Chemicals!

I read once that you should never put anything you can pronounce on your skin or hair!
